That purchase tax had a loophole, if you purchased machinery (that included some cars like the Lotus 7,) in kit form as long as there were no assembly instructions  with the kit, it was tax free. I spent many a happy hour assembling various  kits for a farmer where I lived at the time so he could avoid tax.

I know - My brother found this out. for many years I rather fancoed assembling a kit car myself. Never got round to it, first not enough money, then not enough time. Ah well

If men needed to use them they would be free.
That's just a soundbite. As the wage earner for the family I gladly purchased them in the weekly shop. There's no such thing as free, someone has to pay, T00ts.
What next, free toothpaste and toiletries?
Free food?

I agree, though, that they should not be taxed.

I want to know why UK retailers are still being forced to charge an EU tax. Prior to 1973 we had Purchase Tax on"luxury goods" we only brought in VAT as part of our joining the then EEC we should ditch it domestically. At least one of the original Tory leader candidates in the wake of Mays resignation promised just that ...

I'm waiting for VAT to come down and the UK get tax haven status  ;D

It is an interesting point that we needed EU wide approval to remove VAT from a product. On the Second day of his Premiership I recall Gordon Brown photographed in almost all the papers sitting in a Eurostar train off to Brussels to plead green energy be zero rated. ...

The EU told him to F@@@ off he could only drop it to a lower level they set, not zero.

This fact gave the lie to remainer claims we could set our own tax levels in the referendum run-up

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

There have been many instances during our membership of the EU where our weak and compliant governments have adhered to all and every directive coming out of Brussels . That Germany dropped the tax last year would maybe indicate that like other instances it was maybe easier for Westminster to say 'Its EU rules' rather than actually debate the matter and be responsible for governance .
