The UK hasn't been able to feed itself for well, forever (take with a pinch of salt).  The UK imports 50% of its daily consumption and another 20 to 30% is imported as ingredients to make foods that are consumed (baked etc).

The UK also exports half of it's produce.
We can feed ourselves, but we prefer to trade foods for diversity of diet.
We are a rich country. We import a lot of luxuries.

Supermarkets fully stocked where I live.

I wish we could get away from other countries for supplies and get our own manufacturing and farming ramped up. We just seem to suffer pushing and funding services, arts and drama.

Making more farms into wetlands and marshes is one of Boris' worst thoughts.

I must make a point of reading them. Got to be better than what you left in here...

Yes its the end of civilisation as we know it. You can only get Olive Oil from my local Sainsburys in either small bottles or pay for Premium Brands.
Saying that, my usual brand of Maple Syrup is also absent the shelf, with only Premium brands still on display. Not sure how we blame Brexit for that one.

Yes Gerry. Keep the day job, you're as funny as woodworm in a cripple's stick. (With apologies to cripples)
I am smiling at the total hypocrites, first they say unless you compromise, we can't get it done, then once you do, they take full advantage at every opportunity.
Just because I don't say anything, it doesn't mean I haven't noticed!

See, humor and brexit !
Maybe your right, lets stop all the negative talk of brexit and lets focus on the good news stories. I don't see them in Ireland, so maybe you could kick it off...

nope keep it up gerry.

you are like the sad bastard sitting in the corner no one wants to talk to incase he sucks the life out of them  by your moaning.

The most humourous thing about brexit has been watching you remainers throwing a hissy fit for four years and counting because you cant accept democracy.

Its all looking like a potent mix come the next ge once we get over the covid hysteria , and starmer has to go to the scottish  people to beg us not to vote scot indy. Or in england trying to get the enlgish to accept re joining the eu.

You know i can just see the tories swamping social media or roadside billboards with pictures of starmer in von der leyens top pocket.

Quote from: Borchester on January 13, 2021, 10:59:14 AMApparently the Taoiseach wants the Church to compensate the survivors, although  I am not sure that will be a runner. According to some Irish friends, the reason the state allowed the Church such a role in running the social services in the first place is that the clergy came cheap, which in turn suggests that there is no pot of gold from which to pay out.

Well, that's not how many in Ireland would have seen it. Back then the Church pretty much ran this country such was the power they had. The issue with a lot of these cases is the Mother & Baby homes and the Magdalene laundries etc were joint run by the state and Church. Going on memory when this all broke over 20 yrs ago the Church did a deal limiting their liability by agreeing to pay up to a sum of money as means of compensation and to help survivors. The Govt of the time agreed to this but the full extent of the abuse wasn't known and it transpired what seemed like a generous offer by the Church was more like the Church knowing what was coming and protecting itself.
As far as I know the church hasn't even paid the sums of money it had agreed to pay. I'm not sure
What this has to do with Brexit I don't know, but I wouldn't be any sort of supporter of the Church and I think they should be taken to the cleaners for the crimes they have committed and continue to do so.
A separate issue is most primary schools in IRL are under the patronage of the Church. Obviously they try get them young and indoctrinate them, Govt's over the past 30 yrs have tried to claw that away from them but its a very complicated issue, one point that is pretty sickening is the church agreeing to release the control of schools to the Govt and becoming secular but then the Church wrapped the ownership and control of thousands of schools in a sort of thrust organisation making it very difficult for any Govt to unravel the mess.
It doesn't help when there also alot of Irish (mostly older) that blindly follow the Church, my Dad being a great example. A bit like brexiteer's, just can't and won't let themselves see or thing there is any flaws with their religion-brexit.

I that why you brought this up ?

ok cromwell fair enough , i was just trying to inject a bit of humour into the thread.

I think the forum needs it .

Everyday , we all have to listen to gerry the plastic paddy and smurf spam this forum with anti brexit guff , or in pappys case general trolling of every single thread.

Difficult times for everyone  , and we all need a bit of a laugh and positivity , instead, we have these two muppets doing their best to spread doom and gloom.

Smurf does as he always has done , spout cac , while i dont know what gerry is trying to achieve , it seems to be nothing more than doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Project fear hasnt worked for the last four half years , so gerrys genius plan is to spam this forum with project fear. ;D

Outgoing paperwork is preventing incoming goods?
Uh huh.
It's causing problems in NI, lorries are getting from NI to the UK without a problem as their in the same CU, but those lorries would usually bring foods/goods back and not return empty handed, but a large percentage of lorries that went over from NI are now stuck in the UK, getting out full seems to be a big problem. Two things have happened, NI has a  shortage of deliveries from GB and NI suppliers to the UK are finding there's very few lorries available (want to) deliver to the UK as they know their return trip will take days or they have to come back empty.
