The common law offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel were formally abolished in England and Wales in 2008. Equivalent laws remain in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and rules elsewhere — is this fair, or is it just another case of overzealous political correctness..?

Simply another example of Scottish frugality. They did not know if they might need the laws in the future so decided to hang onto them.

Interestingly enough, there are many other cases where the aforementioned laws belie the accusations of Scots being mean. I have forgotten the source for this but there was a case of a Scottish woman who was about to be burned as a witch and whose last request was for a glass of water. No, replied her executioner sensibly, the drier you are the better you will burn. But the point at issue is not the common sense approach to their jobs by northern civil servants, but the fact that witches were actually burned. A cremation requires about two cubic metres of wood, which is a lot. The English just used a rope which was a hell of a lot cheaper, even if it was not reused.

Seems there is a limit to what people will tolerate.

Depictions of Jesus being homosexual has drawn a reaction:

Get it into perspective. When these laws are lifted it means the ugly minds of TV producers will devise the most shocking and vile images their fiendish minds can muster to up the ratings in the lower depths of hell to try and lower it even more in a competition to the bottom of the sewer. This is the sort of thing they will most be tempted to do at Christmas.

I could not disagree more. One look at goings on in jungles and CCTV filled houses prices they have no further to fall, they are already there.

Except perhaps on their assault on the classics. I'm not entirely sure Bob Cratchitt married a Jamaican Voodoo Priestess in Charles Dickens' book. But the BBC, who of course say on their website "can be trusted" for their accuracy ...

But it would explain the sending of the spirits to plague Scrooge's mind and sanity.

Such as?

It's noted you don't give examples — (breaking dress rules over wearing jewelry claiming "it's a religious requirement", forcing prayers on unwell patients against policy, and sanctions for harassing patients prior to abortion procedures, doesn't count)...

I think the British have had enough of their faith being regulated, and especially by those hotheads which we all know what they do in their own country.

Never, but plenty who have come a cropper through practising their faith.

At least you get it.

Conversely I can't think of many cases where those of minority faiths in this country have "come a cropper". There's definite double standards here, and they are detrimental to our own Christian culture. Unbelievable, really.

A level playing field? Have you heard of anyone being suspended or disciplined for anti-Christian remarks?

You think clubs in Soho care about blasphemy?

Damn, I missed that earlier. Sorry

I presume you refer to "the Romans in Britain" ...

But the fact is when I was about five years too young to go find out for myself, they certainly cared where the exact line was drawn with obscenity ... But that's another story...

Not wishing to contaminate another thread, it does seem the blasphemy law has morphed a little into an unwritten law.

Now it is terrible to say anything detrimental about any religion and will result in the suspension of MPs and candidates.

Unless that religion is Christianity, when they might be cheered on by the secularists.

It's voting maths. If one of our MPs annoys a Christian then the Christian is hardly likely to support the Islamic, but the Islamic vote is growing at an exponential rate and they work as a block, hence if some MP gets sanctioned by the block vote he may never win that constituency again.

It's patchy at the moment, like this is a problem in marginals where there is a high Islamic population. However even if there is a Tory who is PC and is defending his seat on a few hundred votes with a large Islamic vote, another Tory could put his foot in it and trash the colleague's chances. It's the old cliche of "We're all in this together".

Google didn't come up with anything, then? So you threw in a silly remark. Well done, typical for you.  :thdwn:

I didn't Google because nothing has come up on the news to support your view...

Which anti-Christian remarks do you consider to have been worthy of suspension or discipline ?  (Let's pretend you're not turning the other cheek)...

The blaspemy law of recent times in the UK only "protected" Christian (C of E?) beliefs — all others were fair game. I suggest that now everyone enjoys a level playing field here, the idea of fairness under the various laws of hatred and incitement may come as a shock to those who have previously enjoyed immunity...
