I've been one of the counting team. They used to favour bank clerks, as I was at the time.

I can confirm all of the above from slightly hazy memory. However, if you analyse what Rabb said, he didn't say much at all.

It's a bit of a non story, the sort that papasmurf brings up to suggest Rabb will be held in leg irons in the Tower until he is 90.  ;)

Exactly wishful thinking

IF he had sight of postal votes before the count that would be a criminal offence not just for him but those who aided and abetted him to do it.

Raab an obnoxious bastard anyway, something will catch up with him eventually. Tactical voting could get rid of him.

I suspect he doesn't really know what the postal voting results are.

I stood for election to westminster in 2010 and for election to the welsh assembly in 2011.

Postal votes are brought to the count unsealed.

At 10pm as the polls close - and not a microsecond before because right up to that moment ANYONE may run in with a valid postal vote and demand it be added - they are run through a machine to authenticate the signatures electronically and all rejects vetted by the returning officer, counting agents, and any candidates and election agents who are in attendance, any and all of whom may suggest ways to interpret the names, addresses and signatures, but the final decision rests with the returning officer.

I was instrumental in having the vote of some OAP with spidery writing allowed when I suggested the name did in fact look right ... I consider it the most democratic thing I ever did, apart from voting for the official bring a bottle party once and saving their deposit by so doing ...

The opened ballot papers are then counted at a table next to those counting ballots from ward polling stations.

The guy cannot know the results.

They have not been counted yet.

He may know there has been a high return of postal votes which may in the past indicate heavy engagement.

To reveal that would be an offence against the electoral laws.

We were told the turnout of the eu elections 2009 where I was a counting agent on the Thursday the polling stations closed and the sham face down count reveals the turnout, but wecwere also told that to reveal it to anyone outside the room before the returning officer made it public on Sunday/ Monday with the formal declaration would be a breach of the law

IF he knows what is on those papers before about 1am on the 13th dec, a crime has been committed.

If he is broadcasting that he's heading for the cell Usman wont be needing

I suspect he doesn't really know what the postal voting results are.

It's far more likely he was lying to project confidence after a series of bad headlines where he's come across really badly.

Let's be honest, candidates in this election (from both sides, though the conservatives have been the ones pushing the envelope the most) have been lying left right and center.

DR lying about seeing the portal votes is probably one of the smaller lies.

It *should* be fully investigated and the book thrown at him either way (i.e. if he lied, he should have to publicly apologize, if he did see the results and leak them he should be punished).

Many on here have bemoaned the lack of integrity in our politicians. They have always been a bit economical with the truth and used weasel words, but it seems that lately, they have abandoned all pretence of truth.  Now they just say whatever they want.  E.g. BJ saying Parliament had blocked the WA - it passed it and *he* withdrew it.  Now you could argue the toss on that, but he then said that it had blocked the QS!  Again it was passed and he should remember that because it was one of the few votes he actually won.

If we let them get away with small lies, they are emboldened and go on to tell bigger ones until they no longer know where their lies begin or end.

Maybe if we called them out on little ones, we might not have to deal with the big ones.

I have played the link posted in the opening post " no sound" therefore I do not know what is being said, I searched on the Net for another reference to the allegation nothing.

So does anyone know exactly what he is alleged to have done and what Raab said

Actually, I think it's best he keeps his gob firmly closed, as he can't be trusted to open it.

Well there is that....

That sounds like a doctor needs to be seen urgently.

It may actually be an offense

Representation of the people act, sec 66a

It depends on whether his statement could be considered "communicating any information" - he certainly implied it was going well for him which is information as to whom any vote is given that he would have obtained at the counting of the votes

The penalty is serious, big fine and potential jail time.

He might just get away with it though. As he didn't reveal who a particular vote was for, just the overall "shape" of the votes.

Irrc a (possibly labour) candidate was caught doing a similar thing (albeit more seriously as she posted some numbers) about 10 years ago.

He gives the impression he has seen inside the envelopes, at the very least he needs to do some explaining.

I want to know how he has had sight of any postal votes, because he has broken the law if he has.
