He might have had satnav on his mobile and was glancing at it to navigate.  Apparently that is not illegal (as long it's not being used interactively) but it's hardly the hallmark of a real taxi driver!

Real taxi drivers develop a sixth sense by which they instinctively know which way to go, often at the last minute, without signalling.

On a more serious note, more taxi drivers are attacked by passengers than the other way round.

I've never seen a London cabbie use a satnav. I know what you mean about that though. Name any street in London and they'll know where you mean and drive a really complicated way through all the backstreets and very fast.

When I rode a bike I found the safest way was to make the move and get safely past the wobbly-head driver before they realise you are there! It worked every time.

You would not want a ride in this taxi.

I don't use taxis very often either, but all of the local taxis have to have drivers who have been police checked because of the taxi companies having school run contracts involving taking vulnerable/handicapped children to and from school.

Indeed, so the state encroaches further into the prospects of employment for those that don't have many prospects. They are absolute bastards and will create their own problems if certain people in our society, because of some frigin' paperwork, maybe many years ago, forces them on the dole a dole then the dole say you're not trying hard enough and cut their money off. Another one of these bastard tricks was to make all work, whether it be a bit of casual part time work or whatever, be considered under the same hideous regulation as a full-time job, hence meaning employers screen out even more ruthlessly for anyone with something not quite right about them. I was thinking about this today, and reckoned it was as if it were the woman's psyche driven to the extreme with their heads brainwashed by the Daily Mail about mad axemen taxi drivers (it could be you next darling!), and they believe it, hence legislation is passed.

I know but locally that would be more or less all taxi drivers.

No doubt about that Churchill. There were and probably still are Worboys out there. But not that many and a sight less than with the rest of the cab trade.

I just dropped my car off for MOT/service and called a taxi to get home. The driver - Romanian - who has lived here for 12 years and intends to stay post Brexit, had his phone on the seat between his legs and was glancing and searching on it all the way home (7 miles).

I am assuming that is also illegal for taxi drivers. I felt a bit vulnerable so didn't say anything. Would you have done?

My mate once challenged an Asian cab driver because he believed the picture on his license that was hanging from the mirror, wasn't him. He refused to pay, and told him if he wanted the money the cab company should contact him, never heard a thing. In the large town I used to live it is common place for Asian cab drivers to do this, but few people had the bottle to say anything.

Nobody is asking you to, I know what is happening with Uber and why, Khan has basically sacked 45,000 Uber drivers in London they are still in work whilst Uber appeal against his decision, he and TFL have thrown the baby out with the bathwater

If it wasn't that the alternatives are Shaun Bailey and Rory Stewart, I would seriously think of voting for someone other than Saddo Khan.

The point about the Knowledge is not that in these days of Satnavs that you really need someone who knows the route from a hotel in the Strand that was pulled down years ago to that place everyone calls Limehouse Basin but isn't, because you don't. But if a lad or lass is prepared to spend years boning up on the subject then the chances are that they are the sort of stolid, reliable types that  I want driving my often scatty womenfolk around.

Yes proper Hackney Can Drivers  in London were predominantly Jewish.

Most Uber and Mini Cab drivers same a thousands of other drivers simply punch in the pick up point and drop of point of into their fitted sat navs and simply listen to the instructions , same with Mobile Phones not rocket science is it, just listen

I would not use an Uber or a mini-cab.

(Don't you follow current affairs at all? There are reasons Uber is banned from many cities.

A real taxi has a Jewish driver who has done the knowledge and can be relied upon to bring your daughter home when she has ended up in a part of town where  she should not be. As long as they do that they can communicate via carrier pigeons as far as I am concerned.
