Visit from the DWP

An Old Framer high in the Pennines receives a letter from the DWP stating we have received information that you are not paying your staff who work on the farm the Standard Minimum wage we are sending someone to interview you.



Following morning the DWP Inspector arrives and talks to the Framer and says " Tell me about your staff then"



Well says the Farmer " There's the farm hand , I pay him £250 a week and he has a rent free cottage on the farm.



Then there's the House Keeper she gets £150 a week and free board and lodgings.



Then there is the " Half Wit " he does about 90% of the work 7 days a week he draws £25 a week an occasional bottle of whisky, and for a treat now and again he gets to sleep with my wife.



Inspectors says " I need to talk to the Half Wit now"



The Framer replies " You are"

That is very close to a real case locally but it was not the DWP it was a court deciding on what to fine a farmer's son based on earnings.

According to his dad his son didn't have any earnings.
