Are they serious? I know some people want to reduce the population but this has to be the worst idea.

Under EU law electric bicycles and the like such as my 'pedelec' can legally be ridden on the road as a bicycle by a child of 12 (?) 14 (?) and up, but it is a glorified Raleigh 20 and a properly equipped - I mean lights reflectors and brakes and a seat- bicycle. There are other electric vehicles that look like mopeds also road legal but only capable of 15 mph (my bikes electric assistance ends at 21mph and the most I've managed out of it on the flat is 28. On the same flat stretch my cheapo halfords 15 speed pushbike has been pushed to 35... yes you heard me. Lard arsed viking doing 35 on a pushbike. ....

Neither of these electric vehicles need plates, insurance or any registration. I am not forced to wear protective gear. I ride my pedelec unhelmeted because I can. My kids were made to kit up for it as if in a skateboard park.

But as i ay, those were 'traditional' style bicycles and moped lookalikes.

BUT these scooter things are deathtraps with shit all braking and any sort of legalisation must be resisted

The argument seems to be that there are so many in use anyway, the best thing is to legalise them but with maybe a helmet and insurance needed...

Insurance companies are very predictable when it comes to arguments.

Plus a number plate.

That struck me as even more strange — no mention of number plates on the debates I heard. Perhaps the helmet will be numbered or facial recognition will be brought into service...

I expect there will be a lot of roadside memorials like they used to be in France until they tightened the regulations on mopeds.
