We have this rackety old house that has quietly been falling apart for years. But the roof is good and the neighbours are fine and I can't see any reason to do anything to it. But madam can and she has decided she wants the front room redecorated. Specifically she wants the floor relaid with 12mm (1/2") plywood. Christ knows why, but no one is asking my opinion so I rang up Wickes and ordered 12 sheets of 4' x 8' and prepared to move the cooker and sink unit and bookcases and all the other dreck.

And Wickes said sorry, no can do. We are short on drivers.

I was about to suggest that they line up the ones they have and I will happily kiss their arses, but instead I said dear oh dear, that means I will just have to settle back into my armchair and do sod all for weeks and weeks until the matter is sorted out. And the bloke said that was right, but he would see what he could do in the meanwhile.

And I was about to say don't put yourself out lad, but I didn't and I should have because he has just rung back to say everything is kosher, they have found a few extra drivers and the timber will be delivered on Monday.

I had sufficient good manners left to thank the guy.
