I went down a greasy pole at the fire station once.

Possibly the most insane freelance job I ever had was a rewrite of the in house intranet at Swindon Fire And Rescue Service.

At their headquarters at Potterne a Georgian pile overlooking the north bit of Salisbury Plain

The HQ is staffed largely by firefighters too old to continue in active service and the Peter Principle is in full effect. They had a few ancillary staff as well. Sue was one.

I recall Sue, the main front desk clerk, who they had given a desk on the first floor ... She was in utter admiration of the IP based CCTV web page I did, that allowed her to have a decent interface with the (locked, keycarded) front door.

But she said the problem was she still had to get up and go down a flight of stone steps to  greet whoever it was....

I suggested they reinstall the batpole in this wing which at one point had been a functioning fire station

She gave me a withering look and said "you think I could slide down a pole in THESE heels....."

I went down a greasy pole at the fire station once. It was a Boys Brigade outing. What fun.
If George Floyd had gone to a Boys Brigade or similar, he might be alive now and making a decent contribution to society.

.
Not wishing to enter into an exchange of racial epithets, I though it is Italians that are often described as greasy, not Poles...

Disraeli ("I laid it on with a trowel") would have happily stood on any Italian if it helped him climb the greasy pole.

The media here are tripping over themselves to laud and applaud some black woman headmistress in Tiger bay

A brief look at her achievements shows she happily played the race card to enter the world of politics and slide up its greasy pole

On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...

If this is the level of hero that the black community wants to hold up as a shining light then it is a sad state of affairs.
The guy was a career criminal that held a gun at a pregnant women's belly as she was robbed. Seriously??
People want statues of Churchill and the like ripped down and replaced with Floyd and Mandela? A common crim and a terrorist? Jeez!!

I dont know why communities would want such statues but if it makes them happy who are we to complain .  I personally question the  taking down of statues because they dont fit the agenda of minorities rather than ones they put up that do .

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
