I believe the Blair angered the Queen to the point that she has thus far refused his peerage. This means that no following PMs can be offered one either. I wonder if she is planning on outliving dear Tony out of spite.
i know toots , i read about it , funny if true.

Especially brown getting knocked back for a life peerage , i doubt his overblown ego can take it.

:D

I love it when you see the old heros of the brothers and sisters and genuine champagne socialists like alistair "scottish republican" darling in ermine borkie. Or lord Reid and all the other defenders of the poor .

This is another one of these subjects were labour get slaughtered over  thier hypocrisy .

The vermin in ermine , never a truer saying coined.

I find it funny as feck how brown and blair never got a peerage , they must have pissed lizzie right off big time.

What we need is an enlarged and elected House of Lords. The more representatives we have the stronger our democracy. The only problem is that we might end up with some sort of Proportional Representation which would put an end to the Tories inbuilt majority. Still, I dare say that something can be done.

Frankly no. They are generally a waste of space on the benches since they have little regard for the institution of Parliament.

We are constantly told by those who wish the status quo to remain that the lords is some expert chamber of technocrats , but as we all know its simply a chamber of rich party donors to both labour and conservative.

I havent ever seen a debate in that house that didnt involve the majority of the members either sleeping , picking their noses , or watching the clock till they could clock out and pick up their earnings.

The idea cretins like michele mone or the incoherent baron robertson are divinities who we need to look up to is laughable toots.
But you dismiss my point that there is lots wrong with the HoL, that was not part of my argument at all. I like the manner of debate in there. It is civilised. It is not made up of idiot thugs who half the time simply want to disrupt and that includes your guys.

There are a lot of things wrong with the House of Lords but I have just spent the last hour watching their proceedings and it is so civilised. No shouting or barracking but intelligent discussion. It is quite a relief to me who hates rudeness. People talk of disbanding the other place in favour of elected members. If those elected members revert to behaviour similar to the Commons then it will be a disaster. We need people with experience, skills, knowledge - how that can be achieved by popular vote I really don't know.
