Initially I was against HS2 as I thought the money would be much better spent on modernising the existing rail network. Then work started and my thinking changed to "well, now they've decided to build it, best to get on with it. I also thought it made more sense with the two northern extensions. Now one of those is cancelled and the other will probably follow suit. I think HS2 will end up as no more than a fast relief route for the overcrowded West Coast Main Line between London and Birmingham, functioning as part of the normal rail network.

I might not be an expert but I do know enough to correct you when you're wrong!

HS2 was always ultimately about joining the North and eventually Ireland  to Europe's  TEN-T high speed rail network ,its principle use  as a freight line under the control of  the Trans European network

What's interesting though is that the part of HS2 that's been scrapped ,East Yorkshire , was not in the original proposals for corridor 8 (the EUs plan for an integrated transport system Cork- Marseille ) the part that remains was .   Make of that what you will .

Investment  in the towns and city's of the north should be prioritised over rail . Im sure the people of Bradford would rather have a job on their doorstep than ten minutes off their commute to Leeds .

No surprises as it was unfeasible, too expensive and maybe not that necessary.

Kier Starmer, who opposed HS2, criticised the cancellation as being a betrayal of the North.
This is how the Tories are now dealing with Labour. You can't argue with someone who agrees with you, not without looking a complete idiot anyway.
They are doing what Labour wanted and Starmer is going the other way. 😂
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
