Had a closer look at the wood. I should be able to make some of it into a cold frame. ( I already have a " wombled" window.)

I never stop hearing about CO2 emissions and global warming. Walk through my village on a winters night and it smells like a giant bonfire. Strange how this hasn't been addressed ?

I have a huge pile of wood myself, but where my open fire is now is a gas fire.

We used to have open fires at my parent's house but they nearly always used coal. Wood is a hassle because you have to keep on poking it and adding more pieces, whereas with coal, once you have it alight it does tend to burn for much longer. I do enjoy a nice fire, but it's one of those things that is suited to a large room with a lot of people in it all sitting down for the evening and keen to mess with fires. I mean leave it for 30 seconds and those pieces of wood have a habit of spitting out chunks onto the carpet and burning a hole in your finest Axminster. They can jump a long way, and easily clear the stonework surrounding it.

No mains gas, where I live, electricity, is not that reliable, oil is too expensive, so I just carry on with the open fire, with back boiler to heat the radiators. (Hardly needed to light a fire so far this winter anyway.)

Really? I have been cold since October.

I went outside  this morning to find the "fairies" had delivered a large amount of firewood. (Already in bags.)

Sounds like the sort of thing my nephew would do. Queer as a nine bob note but a thoroughly decent fellow all the same. The only problem with wood stoves and fires is that they eat timber. Our wood box can hold a cubic metre but barely lasts a fortnight.
