Just as well they stopped burning witches , the Mother in law would never have made old bones that's for sure . Coming from Croydon though its no surprise the wifes   5 sisters are proud owners of broomsticks and black cats .

Croydon has the highest concentration of witches in the UK (timeout.com)

I'd like to say this type of thing couldn't happen today, but the veneer of civilisation is thinner than many think.

Or thicker than you might think.

Your namesake, Oliver Cromwell believed as fervently in witches as we believe in motor cars, but refused to agree to their persecution. Unfortunately for Mathew Hopkins' victims, Cromwell did not become Lord Protector until six years after the Witchfinder General's death

Sad storys cromwell.

I know the one at maxwelton in paisley very well. I mind i used to get the bus down from foxbar  , going into paisley , and the bus route takes you right over the cross roads at maxwelton as it then trundles down canal street towards the town centre.

Years ago , i was on the bus wae my auld grandpa and asked what the horseshoe was for in the middle of the crossroads ,and he told me thats where the witches were buried , and i thought he was winding me up. He went on to tell me the sad story.

Brutal stuff cromwell. We might be over three hundred years on in time , but as you say , the veneer of civilisation is indeed thinner than many think.

Witches' Memorials in Scotland

The Witchcraft Act 1563 resulted in approximately 4,000 innocent people being accused of witchcraft. Confessions were routinely obtained by torture and around 2,500 of those accused were convicted and executed, normally by way of strangulation and then burning at the stake. Scotland killed five times as many people as witches than elsewhere in Europe. 85% of those accused were women.

Many markers, stones and memorials across Scotland remember the local people who were sent to their brutal deaths prior to the repeal of the the Witchcraft Act in 1736.

Gallow Green, Paisley
In 1696, 4 women, a man & 2 children were strangled and burned at this site after being found guilty of witchcraft. Another man hung himself in jail before the sentence could be carried out.
The well is all that remains today.
