You're confusing leading technology with ripping it off. China and the likes are the worlds best a copying stuff, I have walked down Nanjing Rd in Shanghai and seen it in all its glory. Apple are leading the world in technology that works and is stable. The rest develop tech that is flimsy and gimicky.

Incorrect. This is patent stuff and Huawei own about 30% of them in 5G technology, i.e. the minimum technology you need to licence to manufacture 5G equipment. ZTE are also big 5G patent holders and the rest are owned by European as I understand it. There might be the odd US patent, but generally speaking they own sod-all in 5G IP. If the US had invented the technology, don't you suppose they would have had the nouse to patent it?

As you know, mobiles are of a certain generation, or G as it is known. Like you have the Escort and the Escort mk2, mk3 etc, so we have a mobile communication standards that evolve into discrete set of rules on how it works. They are known as protocols, and as technology advances, so you need to adapt your protocol in sympathy with it.

It so happens that over in the Far East and also Norway, they have taken the lead in the technology behind mobile standards so they are first to market. They have the 5G system working and in production. The body which decides the standards is international and made up of representatives from those it concerns, i.e. the companies in that line of business. Another point is that of course if you are leading in the technology, you don't just get to influence the standard more, but you patent the technology you develop so other players have to licence it from you. That's not really as bad as it seems when you have different players kind of neck and neck because the typical case is, hey we will licence this to you if you licence that to us, hence often money does not have to be paid in licencing as much as you would have thought. Well that is unless you as a firm have nothing to offer, where you will have to pay the fee for all the licencing of other firm's technology.

Unfortunately for America, it does not have anything to offer, so it has to pay the full licencing, and it has not really had much of a say in the 5G standard, cos the technology is kind of above their heads. This basically spells trouble for they sit there watching their trade enemy do a kind of Google with the 5G system. You know Google became king of search engines, well by the same logic they will be king of communication infrastructure. This looks even worse, and scary. Trump has the answer though. It's like the kid who fails his O levels so he can't do his A levels and thinks, oh I'll just start my degree now.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

You are taking a silly off the cuff Trump remark far too seriously, Baron.

This is deadly serious and has far greater consequences than you can imagine.

Fact: we know America has decided to stall the rollout of 5G. Trump has been muttering on about this idea of doing the next generation for a while. They can't compete if their firms don't even have 5G ready for production when over in China they have been working on 6G for a long while. You see they invest in basic research and you have to invent a lot of complicated physics stuff to make 6G ten times faster than 5G. 5G is the spec it is because it is the best technology has to offer. I'd be very surprised if they can catch up. It's not as if their telecoms firms have not tried to compete in the 5G because clearly they are not stupid and know they would be out of business if they dragged their feet. The reason is that over in Shenzhen things go at "Shenzhen speed" and this is like everything in that place goes faster. Yankee doodle can't keep up.

That's exactly what Trump has decided to do. America is 4G except for a few test sites and to beat the Chinese he is just going to move straight into 6G, which is what the Chinese firms who are rolling out 5G are working on, because they have finished the 5G spec and design.

Can you explain the thread header please. (It isn't clear from the thread starter.)

That is unless you mean America is going to have to go from 4G to 6G (if that ever happens.)
