Actually the word paedophile is a misnomer in itself. Its literal meaning is lover of children, because phile means you support it, e.g. Europhile and so on.

so I have just checked to see. It originates from the word pedophilia and that came in 1900.

Now we find out it came from Richard von Krafft-Ebing.

Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing[1] (1840-1902; full name Richard Fridolin Joseph Freiherr Krafft von Festenberg auf Frohnberg, genannt von Ebing) was an Austro–German psychiatrist and author of the foundational work Psychopathia Sexualis (1886).

Bloody hell, this looks like one of my ancestors with a name like that!!

Now we need to read Psychopathia Sexualis to find out more.

This is where we find answers.

QuotePsychopathia Sexualis (Psychopathy of Sex), by Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing, is one of the first texts about sexual pathology. First published in 1886 in German with the subtitle "with Special Reference to the Antipathic Sexual Instinct: A Medico-Forensic Study", the book details a wide range of paraphilias, with a special emphasis on male homosexuality (the "antipathic instinct" of the subtitle). Krafft-Ebing also coined the terms sadism and masochism in the book.

The Psychopathia Sexualis is notable for being one of the earliest works on homosexuality. Krafft-Ebing combined Karl Ulrichs' Urning theory with Bénédict Morel's theory of disease and concluded that most homosexuals have a mental illness caused by degenerate heredity. The book was controversial at the time, arousing the anger of the church in particular.

The book had a considerable influence on continental European forensic psychiatry in the first part of the 20th century. It is regarded as the bible of psychopathology.[1]

In 2006, an independent film based on the book was made in Atlanta; the film was titled Psychopathia Sexualis.

This is the reference of interest:

So in 2017 a book written in 1886 is regarded as gospel. There you have it. This is where they went wrong.

If that is all Musk said IMO a very weak case , not surprising the Jury threw it out

According to the Urban Dictionary it means

An abbreviation of the word torpedo, pedo is a term of endearment often used by business magnates, investors and engineers, for a fast and excellent swimmer or diver. Sometimes, divers in Thailand who rescue young soccer teams from caves believe it means pedophile, but that's not the case.

PERSON 1: "Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it."

PERSON 2: "Did you just call me a pedophile?"

PERSON 1: No, it's short for torpedo. You swim really fast."

PERSON 2: "Oh my bad. And thank you. You are a true gentleman."

PERSON 1: "And you, sir, are a true pedo."

Looks like some people are just too thin skinned for their own good:

Elon Musk did not defame a British caver who helped in last year's rescue of trapped Thai schoolboys by calling him a "pedo guy", a US jury has found.

Vernon Unsworth sought $190m (£145m) in damages from the Tesla founder, arguing that the tweet damaged his reputation.

A public row broke out between the two men over the rescue of 12 boys trapped in a Thai cave in June 2018.

Mr Musk told the court this week the phrase "pedo guy" was common in South Africa, where he grew up.

Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom after the jury reached its decision, Mr Musk said: "My faith in humanity is restored."

So now referring to, or addressing, people on "social media" as a 'pedo guy' is just general banter. Hope Unsworth is rich or was crowd funded.

Wonder if the rules are going to be re-assessed/relaxed on here...?

It just means children's guy.
Quotepedo-

before vowels ped-, word-forming element meaning "boy, child," from Greek pedo-, combining form of pais "boy, child," especially a son, from PIE root *pau- (1) "few, little." The British form paed- is better because it avoids confusion with the ped- that means "foot" (from PIE root *ped-). Compare, from the same root, Sanskrit putrah "son;" Avestan puthra- "son, child;" Latin puer "child, boy," Oscan puklu "child."

I would be checking the jurors' bank accounts. That is an outrageous decision.
