Hmmm

About a year ago I finally got to see a cardiologist about by dicky ticker.

He made several changes to the drug regimen I am stuck with, including addition of a new one intended to drain fluid from my blood, and thus my lungs, to aid breathing.

I strangely found myself pacified to the point of indolence, a modern day lotus eater.

I never understood why. But that is because I deliberately avoided looking up the drugs in the British Pharmacopoeia, the Merck Index and above all else the 'net. Because even someone with my degree or above can be fooled into thinking a cold is a deadly plague by consulting the internet !!

On Friday I was prescribed a new tablet that was absolutely 100% contraindicated if you were taking another I was also prescribed.

The problem is that taken together they can cause potassium levels in the bloodstream high enough to cause the breakdown in cardiac function normally triggered in the execution chamber where lethal injection is used.

Naturally I asked a few questions.

I looked up the second drug, Spironolactone.

That's when I found that not only did it spike my potassium, it also blocked the effect of testosterone.

And another of the drugs I am on absolutely, utterly contraindicates taking the little blue pill. With my heart reduced to a BP of 107/67 it would cause a few short circuits.

But in order to facilitate the new tablet, I have been i ordered to go cold turkey and crash-stop taking Spironolactone.

If I suddenly display an urge to murder someone, this is why.
Thank goodness they haven't found a pill to remove the sense of humour. I do worry myself at the willingness to prescribe without checking what other ailments/remedies you might already be consuming. Joined up thinking seems irrelevant to the medical profession.

<t>In matters of taxation, Lord Clyde\'s summing up in the 1929 case Inland Revenue v Ayrshire Pullman Services is worth a glance.</t>
