This is not a simple problem.

Too often, the believers of Victorian-contrived British history won't accept what their forebears did was wrong, and won't agree to any commentary on the negative aspects of their lives.

Confronting them, they have the restitution-at-any-price brigade who cannot make up their minds whether to erase individuals from British history, or permanently deface any memorials in continuous protest.

I'm happy to leave memorials where they are, provided they have conspicuous truthful narratives of their lives nearby. I'd even leave the identity of buildings named after slave traders if such locations are widely recognised...

It looks as though certain ethnic groups have finally twigged that removing anything pertaining to slavery is having the effect of wiping away a lot of their history. As everyone said, how are you supposed to learn from a period of history if every part of it is cancelled.
