Cypriot neighbours at the end of our garden use their barbecue for cooking on most weekends, all year round — even at Christmas.

I've got about four sacks of charcoal left, so I might fire up ours. I'm sure Mrs P would agree as she's a cold climate girl, and the kids might enjoy it too...
On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...

Marvellous how they could plan for net zero but not plan to keep the lights on.
I suppose we are following the science of energy production, Cromwell. It's fairly basic maths, but it seems that the governments of the last 2 decades, (and I blame the Tories and Boris in particular for not going nuclear earlier and bigger) cannot figure out just how much we need.
Although our peak energy demand has been falling over the years, it could still get close to 50 GW this winter.
If the wind is not blowing and it is cloudy, we don't have enough generating ability to cover it. Gas can do about 30GW (if we can get the gas), nuclear about 6GW, biomass and coal maybe another 5 GW makes 41 GW.
In the current energy crisis Europe will not be able to send any so we need to reduce demand by 20%. Maybe a 4 day week for industries using a lot of power will have to be implemented.
I've just checked our smart meter and we are using 45W. Two LED lights, a radio, and a few things on standby. We can't reduce our usage any more!

I'm really looking forward to sitting at home with our overcoats on, reading a book by candlelight this winter.

As far as I can see, the PM's plan is to have the government pay off a chunk of the electorate's energy bill. That is fine by me and anyone who objects is free to send the money back

Reading the article, it doesn't read well for Truss's unpaid for plan.
