What a load of 💩. It's a maritime thing, the flag upside down is a way for the ship showing distress. 🤦
Quite, a Union Jack and a Union    Flag are two different things. (Despite far too many people using Union Jack wrongly. )

The Union Jack is a combination of the English, Scottish and Northern Irish flags. None of those flags can be flown 'upside down' because they look the same either way up.
It's only the offset given to the Northern Ireland part of the Union Jack that makes it look different if it's upside down. So flying it upside down is, at most, a minor breach of vexillological etiquette.

What's much worse is that a bunch of racist thugs play the 'patriotic' card when they're actually rejecting the decent values of our society and culture.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Same at the Olympics — though maybe the excitement of the moment overrides care.

Isn't an upside down union flag a sign of distress...?
Yes, you are correct Pat, flying upside down was used on the back of boats as a sign of distress: usually meaning that a boat was being attacked or chased. It was also used as an insult to the crown.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

It is a myth that the flag flown upside down is a distress signal.

I am puzzled at to why so many of the British "patriots" at the recent demos/riots don't know the right way up for the British Flag.

On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...
