     East Croydon station was where I caught a train to Victoria on my way to a ballet class every Saturday as a 12 yr old. On my own it took me a bus, train, bus and 20 minute walk to reach my class. 2 hours dancing and then the return journey. Happy days. I wonder how many would send a child alone now?

Not many. I have often thought of publishing a magazine called Terrified Parents: Something New For You To Worry About Every Day. I am sure that it would be successful.  :D

No thank god

Oh don't knock it! It wasn't too bad when I was little. We used to shop there although didn't live there and I remember some lovely shops at that time. I did drive through a few years back and was a bit shocked - concrete city came to mind - and although the street names were familiar that was about all. I remember it now of course for the riots and fires.

Apparently that was what actually happened. The Scots reached Derby and started upon their triumphant march on London. And when they reach East Croydon Bonnie Prince Charlie cried, "Behold, the jewel in my crown!" whereupon the Scots said, "Fook off, we aren't fighting for that sh!thole" and went home.

Of course, the Beeb is too PC to print that so we ended up with the current fairy tale

<t>In matters of taxation, Lord Clyde\'s summing up in the 1929 case Inland Revenue v Ayrshire Pullman Services is worth a glance.</t>

The BBC's History Magazine's March issue has an account of the Campbell militia (at the behest of John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair) and with the support of William III) murdering about 40 men, women and children of Clan MacDonald. No surprise there, except that I was expecting one. I thought that there would be a new approach to the story with maybe a row developing between the two clans over the best way to prepare the perfect vegan nut roast (Not that unlikely. The last time I was in Glencoe I was expecting a blood stained re enactment of the massacre by way of parting the tourists from the cash they really did not need. Instead they had a spanking new health food shop selling beans and pulses and similar such slops), but no It was straight from the pages of John Prebble without the latter's poetry.
