I can't sign that petition, sorry.

My dog hated fireworks and used to tremble while they were going off. However, next day he would be over it.

We only have a cat now, which is not very impressed, but doesn't have a nervous breakdown. So, I do appreciate the animal stress problem.

BUT, I think that the freedom of people to let off a few fireworks trumps it.

My reasons for not signing are:

1. Badly worded petitions don't get my approval. "It's time something was fine to stop this" gets a big X.  :kikass:

2. I want to get some fireworks to let off next Thursday to celebrate an event, so if I want to buy some, why shouldn't other people be able to?

So you actually believe that pleasure of a minority of people outweighs the fear of millions of animals. Some people enjoy fox hunting, badger bating, bull fighting etc etc. All three are examples of freedom, but does it make it right ?

From my end of the bell curve, and maybe it is the very end,  the only injuries I've witnessed are at, or from, organised displays gone tits up.

That includes my time in the back corridors of Cardiff's largest A & E unit wearing a lab coat 1979-1982 ...

The problem as you well know is that personal experience does not extrapolate to the national picture.

It also is not just casualties, it is the antisocial behaviour associated with misuse, including throwing fireworks at emergency services, lit fireworks through letter boxes and a wide range of other nasty behaviour.

What you have witnessed is somewhat at odds with hospital casualty department statistics.

Firework packaging should show graphic injuries, doctors say

Almost 4,500 people in England attended A&E with injuries from fireworks last year, double the number in 2009-10, according to figures from NHS Digital.

Again, I'm sure someone has assembled all sorts of figures.

I believe that most injuries are caused by people who fail to read or follow instructions, or simply treat them as toys. Some have received Darwin awards.

It would appear that this year locally the firework injuries have started early:-

Possibly so. But the only time I have witnessed injury to participants was at organised displays. After that incident which wasnt the first I lost interestfor years.

What, you mean like the organised, round table managed, council overseen display in Cwmbran where the car parking was so anarchic that when a rocket the size of one of my rapier missiles got caught by the wind and hit a bloke in the stand opposite me in the chest, the ambulance crew took ages to get to him, take him away (by hand, through the chaotic car park) to the ambukance they called up from control because the one onsite had been blocked by anarchic car drivers abandoning their cars in the emergency lanes...

The hapless twonks running the show were broadcasting over the tannoy for a good 20 minutes asking for drivers of cars to shift them. I would have bulldozed them.

I go to a rugby club across the river these days, they share the clubhouse with ambulance control and yes, the display organisers from ambulance control remember that Cwmbran night only too well. Which is why they actually announce before it starts that one of the spectators is a fully licenced bulldozer driver and WILL NOT HESITATE to remove vehicles blocking the emergency access using the one in the field opposite ...

You are proving my point for the licencing and training of people for the purpose of managing firework events.

Pets being scared is not the major issue, it is the injuries and sometimes death caused by the misuse.

There are so many organised firework events there is no reason whatsoever for the general public to be able to buy them.

Petition on the subject:-

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/276425">https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/276425

Petition

Ban fireworks for general sale to the public.

Every year more and more people, animals and wildlife get hurt by fireworks. It's time something was fine to stop this. There are enough organised firework groups around for us to still enjoy fireworks safely so please help me stop the needless sale of them to the public!

▼More details

The noise from fireworks causes a great amount of fear, stress and anxiety in wild animals. ... Errant fireworks can also cause environmental damage though fires, and from the release of poisonous chemicals and particle-laden smoke, which is not just inhaled by wildlife, but contaminates the natural environment.

In England last year, 4,436 individuals attended A&E because of an injury caused by a firework - more than double the 2,141 in 2009/10.

With around 40% of the UKs dogs being scared.

The sale of fireworks to the general public should have been banned long ago.
