Not saying you voted for or support the conservatives.

Simply saying that despite all the advantages the UK had in the face of this pandemic, including a decent (despite their meddling) health system, they still managed to fork it up.

The govt has been worse than useless, no doubt, but the NHS has the lowest score on outcomes/healthy lives in the famous commonwealth fund report. That is the most important part of it.

That score was a better a few years back...

So? Govt incompetence mainly, but yes also years of NHS underinvestment etc.

Vietnam has done exceptionally well despite being the 2nd most popular Chinese tourist destination.

..whereas the imbecile who threatened to shoot anyone who broke quarantine in Philippines is failing abysmally.

As someone who voted Corbyn and generally seems to be accused on here of saying "the Tories the Tories the Tories", that was ...nevermind.

no doubt stuff like that played a part

not sure that gets the government who championed and executed many of those reforms off the hook tho!

Have we had a humour bypass on here.

If you're looking to be offended, please read this

Now, I can always count on the folks on there to trivialize any situation with real aplomb. :D

As for bed bug crap etc, yeah the govt's done a terrible job, but no we don't have the best health service ever. The years of neglect and privatization (incl under Bliar) have really messed things up.

Didn't say best, said good.

Despite what has been done to it, it still performs well overall on an international scale.

Certainly well enough that it wasn't the reason we've performed so badly so far.

Yeah but a large chunk of that 37k were avoidable if the government hadn't crapped the bed so royally.

I know the FT have revised the figures are now only the 2nd worst in the world by per/capita but there really isn't any way of describing the UK performance other than very, very poor.

We had all the advantages, we were not hit first, we're an island, we are rich, we have a good health service, a solid science base etc etc

And yet, at this failed at their (and any other government's) primary goal - protecting it's citizens.

There's many pages left in this story but the first chapter was rubbish.

Trivialising a situation that has led to 37,000 deaths in UK in the last 4 months is rather pathetic.

Actually, there have been many more deaths than 37,000 in the last 4 months, in fact well over 200,000 I believe, yet you seem to think the 37,000 are more important than the others. How is that the case?

Ah but deaths per capita is clearly the wrong(*) measure....

If you look at the number of deaths per right hand drive vehicle registered, the UK is amongst the best performing in the world.....

(*) Clearly wrong because it paints our response in a bad light.

Trivialising a situation that has led to 37,000 deaths in UK in the last 4 months is rather pathetic.

Wow.

From worldometers link:

UK has:

2nd highest total deaths in the world after USA

3rd highest 'new deaths'

Very bad stats, shocking in fact.

It was covered in the FT also today - that dishonest and innumerate tabloid have been guilty of:

- Creating the country comparison death rate slide that the government dropped when we started to look worse than other countries.

- Publishing the trumped up nonsense that we are now the worst country in the world on deaths per capita.

In any case, the FT pub'd this 2 hours ago and it's all I can find;

https://www.ft.com/content/6b4c784e-c259-4ca4-9a82-648ffde71bf0">https://www.ft.com/content/6b4c784e-c25 ... 8ffde71bf0">https://www.ft.com/content/6b4c784e-c259-4ca4-9a82-648ffde71bf0

This article has been amended to take into account a one-off revision to Spanish data on Thursday. This meant the UK now has the second-highest death rate from coronavirus after Spain rather than the highest rate as originally reported. This article has been modified to replace a chart linking excess deaths to lockdown dates with one linking excess deaths per million

It wasn't far off, the indy article.
