QuoteLet's stop clapping for the NHS, says woman who started the ritual

Dutch national living in London fears Clap for Carers during coronavirus lockdown has become politicised

The originator of the weekly "clap for carers" has said next Thursday's show of support should be the last, amid concerns the event has become politicised.

Annemarie Plas, a Dutch national living in south London, said she was "overwhelmed" by the support for the ritual, but it was better to stop while it was at its peak.

She said: "I think it's good to have the last of the series next Thursday, because to have the most impact I think it is good to stop it at its peak.

"Without getting too political, I share some of the opinions that some people have about it becoming politicised. I think the narrative is starting to change and I don't want the clap to be negative."

Banging pans as loudly as you can, setting off fireworks, making tribal chesthumpy noises, is no substitute for a quiet word in an NHS or care worker's ear telling them you deeply appreciate the work they do.

(shrug)

Again you can do both.
Don't believe everything you think.

Someone those things *and* clap.

This is not a zero sum game.

But have you seen the top cheerleaders of this? The sun, the daily mail etc?

They're already turning on migrant hospital workers, care workers and definitely on furloughed workers.

I and many others, and the NHS doc in the link aren't going to let ourselves be useful puppets for the right-wing rags and the govt propaganda storm.

If you wanna do something useful, send them money, try to volunteer, offer them free food or anything else they need, offer help in any real way.

And before you ask "have you done that yourself" I'm sure you know the answer already.

I do not. No.

And the more people that are in public support of the NHS, the harder a time the governments going to have enforcing pay freezes, etc.

They are, but hinting at a pay freeze for NHS workers, treating them like crap, then getting the public to clap for them is like hitting someone while patting them on the back.

Some carers like the clapping, why deny them what is intended to be a nice sentiment?

Why is clapping presented as in opposition to proper funding and equipment supplies. They are mutually exclusive.

I know similar things have been posted, but it 'works' when coming from an NHS worker.

Funnily enough there was none of these antics in our street yesterday, nor the week before.

The week before that, the firework nutter let off enough ordnance to bring down the ISS

No nor me . I suppose it has some merit if you live opposite a hospital or maybe a nurses home but you look a bit of a prat clapping at a pub that's been shut for two months .

With regard the other points people who sign up for the NHS  know what its all about ,conditions ,pay ect . Yes we would all like to see it better run and better wages for the lowest paid  but that's been a problem for some time , corona or no corona .
