Maybe so but "starting a war" could involve deliberately provoking Syria into attacking Turkey, which is a member of NATO.

Come on quackers , there is nothing that would provoke anyone into attacking a NATO Nation short of being attacked themselves .

Unless they are completely off their rockers that is

With the way Trump's going, I reckon we need to get out of NATO quick, before he starts a war somewhere and the treaty drags us in.

Countries starting wars is not covered under the NATO treaty . It is a defence and peace pact not one of aggression .

Indeed.

But being a trade deal with America is the golden ticket for Brexit success, whilst May wooed the orange man with a handhold down the stairs, Johnson will likely humour the great deal breaker with his anti global rhetoric.

I was kind of expecting this, but Trump has a record of announcing things that are actually a threat rather than what he's really going to do.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the USA's WHO contribution for this year was mainly already paid (?) so if that's true, this decision won't have any impact on WHO funding until next year, by which time either Trump won't be there anymore, or he will not be facing an imminent election so he can roll back on it.

The other interesting question is that if he is "terminating the relationship", does this mean the WHO should cut off the US scientists from receiving data and information and exclude them from their meetings etc?  I'm not sure how much of the WHO activity and documents are not public anyway, but surely if they are not paying in, they shouldn't get any of the benefit of the work done?

Rule number one in politics. Blame someone else for your mistakes!

I don't know what the financial implications of this are or will it perhaps be for other nations to just increase their contributions (at a time they are borrowing more!) or maybe the WHO will have to scale down it global health organisation to something more basic. But what I do know is this is a clear political stunt. That is to say this isn't blaming the WHO but again blaming China! for Trumps incompetence to win more votes. It is difficult to see what more China could have done than shutdown and entire city although like Trump they were in denile to begin with I guess. The problem the West had, and especially America, was they didn't take this pandemic seriously until it was too late. It wasn't China who said this virus would disappear like some form of miracle.

We can debate the best ways to work with Covid19 or what we can do to control the virus to manageable level. But what we can't do is do nothing and then play the blame game for our own mistakes that this causes. A true leader stands by his decisions. He doesn't hide away and blame the chair because he couldn't stand up.
