Totally disagree if a marathon runner like all others athletes and those that indulge in sports activities at high levels take care of their bodies and eat sensibly they do not train to excess all day every day, yes some may have joint problems later in life, same goes for people who undertake sport for fun and enjoyment, it happens to people who sit on their arse all day.

Runners swimmers, cyclists etc do not have bulky bulging muscles you only have to look  at them what they do have is strong muscles, their aim is stamina healthy heart and lungs and mental strength not huge muscles, when they stop they will only get overweight if they do not eat sensibly and keep active, as they care about their bodies not likely to happen for the majority of them

Our biggest  health problem in the UK is obesity especially among youngsters carrying too much weight not exercising even moderately coupled with a bad diet is costing the HHS a fortune to treat now if not it will lead to, heart and breathing problems , diabetes leading to kidney failure for some, joints needing replacements at very young ages.

So it was roughly what I was saying. Moderation is the answer. Too little = bad & too much = bad. Actually walking is supposed to be one of the best exercises. It's natural, unlike cycling. Anyway I see a lot of fitness freaks and they are addicted to it. When you use your muscles your body produces a chemical which works in a similar way to heroin. You get as high off it, hence the addiction factor.

People are fat because they eat too much carbohydrate vs protein. Protein often comes from meat. I like an 8oz steak for my dinner, but how much meat would you get on a pizza or some Morrison's ready meal? See; they get ripped. A chicken thing might only be 15% chicken. Milk is often semi-skinned as well, i,e, removal of protein. It's the protein that makes your body feel full up, or else you would keep on eating much more carbohydrate than you would use, so it turns to fat.

Marathon runners start by running short distances that they gradually increase 5k 10k 15k until they know they have the physical ability to run that far, but more importantly the mental state of mind to do it and keep their body going, some can run a marathon day after day Eddie Izard completed 43 marathons in 51 days

He will need his hips replaced in a few years and probably his knees as well.

The other thing is regarding muscles, keep doing it and they will be fine and become big and strong. When you finally retire most of the tissue will turn to fat.

When Leonardo painted Lady with an Ermine, he included the ermine because it was a symbol of moderation, and moderation was considered a virtue. The Daily Mail has forever lost this wisdom of the past and most of its readers too.

But then the truth is that not an inch of those 26 miles they walked helped anyone in the slightest. If many had not done anything like it then chances are some of those bodies screwed up as a result. The body can not handle 26 miles if it only walks as far as the garage in a normal day. It could cause injury.

But then lets all sing along together: We are the proles...

Ive just been up to Trafalgar square with some dry clobber for a few friends who got drenched walking 26 miles for disadvantaged kids . Many of those taking part had never done anything like it  had only the help of the person beside them and the will to get to the end .Many  were completely done for by the end and will I dare say spend tomorrow resting before returning to work on Monday

The time was irrelevant ,it was the doing it that mattered .

On the other hand a decent athlete has broken the 2 hour barrier for running 26 miles with the help of 41 pacemakers and a laser guided system that made sure he ran the shortest route . Well done

I know where my respect and  who my thoughts will be with in the coming days .

I don't suppose it will be long before the fab shoes will be available to all athletes. Then we will see what man can do.

Churchill

Of course been used for years, another example is Tour de France and other cycle races its a team effort to get the best sprinter in position

If you think about it even in Athletics meetings there are often pace makers if someone is going for a record.

Churchill

I agree it was a magnificent feat of endurance, yes he had pacemakers excellent athletes in their own right, the course was flat and his positioning on the route was mapped out for him by a laser beam, now we know it can be done

He did it to prove that a human could run a marathon in under 2 hours. He's the Olympic champion, he's got nothing to prove as an athlete, and that was his third attempt to break 2 hours. He still run that time despite the help and it's not recognised as a world record because of the help, in my opinion, it was still a feat of human endurance.

Streetwalker

Kpchoge is obviously a fine athlete  and the world record holder for the marathon at 1.39 over the 2 hour mark but this sub 2 hour run was a scientific experiment and is not even being recognised as an official time . Leaving aside my personal experience of Saturday the guy had that much help he may as well have done it by bike .
