I guess I'm mixing up two cases then, I distinctly remember SR doing something in the courts, and being all over the news but it must have been a while back. Sorry.

And yes, I do understand about prices for "spur of the moment" journeys,

Well, our two together Railcard got us from Newport to Paddington and out to Heathrow Terminal 5 and back for about fifty quid each on an 'open' return, and at the end of the month the same Railcard is going to get me and the missus to Piccadilly Circus and back in a day for about twenty three quid each ....

But you are right about the lack of space for heavy luggage

Hasn't the train company won a court case

Don't known about the company winning a Court case not read about one, the Post Office won their case the other day to rule this strike vote was not carried out within the rules , so no Post Strike this side of Christmas.

Unless you book well in advance when I have contemplated using a train for a long journey, it was cheaper to fly to Spain for a long weekend than travel 250 miles up to the North of England, and getting two heavy bags to the station at both ends never mind not being able to get them on the train

With the  overcrowding on southern rail trains into London a goods wagon would be a welcome alternative to standing with a builders armpit in your face

I have not travelled on a train in the UK for years due to the fact the fares are too high and inconvenient for me especially if carrying heavy luggage as one gets older, but I do know people that do use them to commute into London and the service is bad enough and unreliable as it is.

Wife and I were away last weekend to visit family to travel by train would have cost over £200 by the time I could get to Euston I can be in Birmingham driving myself, I am thinking more of those who would lose money not being able to get work and back, or whose holiday plans have been ruined over an argument about a guard on a train.

I am sure some do not want to go on strike, and some may even fear the consequences if the don't

Goods trains in the UK haven't had guards for thirty years or more, the only exceptions being  where nuclear material is carried or small branches where crossings were manually operated.

Do keep up Pat  :-P

Just shows how behind the times are the unions' arguments for train guards being essential...
On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...

Also there are no passengers to get trapped.

The TOC statements I've seen state the idea is not to remove personnel from passenger trains, but gain efficiency by upgrading the responsibilities of train managers.

Some freight trains in other countries have already dispensed with a separate guard...

Oh so you did my mistake, but what has that got to do with Penzance Railway Station that is the once with the long station you introduced into the thread why no idea.

Even my home town station almost end of the line cannot handle a rural diesel train with more than four or five carriages as the platform is too short has CCTV, and no staff more often than not
