I've had it with toasters and kettles.

They keep breaking down on me. I bought two top kettles and both failed just outside their guarantee period, and so did an over-priced British toaster.

What I'm going to do is get a microwave which has a combined grill and conventional oven. They use these quartz infrared elements, and I think they will be far more reliable. I only want to toast one side you see. I don't eat toasted bread, but I do like to toast chocolate croissants and hot cross buns.

The idea with the microwave, by the way, is that I use a conventional oven quite a lot, but the one I have is large, like twice the size, and I often only use a small space in it. Since a microwave is about half the size it should cut the cost of electric by half, and by doing that it will pay for itself.

I'm also into this AI stuff. These new microwaves actually work out what you have put in it and then use a combination of all three to cook what is inside perfectly. Bloody clever I say, but that's how it is over in more sophisticated counties.

I have one and would highly recommend them!! As far as I know they're more economical and heat/cook just as well. Mine doesn't have a turntable which was a bit weird at first but microwaves just the same.

We have had those for years, the only caveat is do not exceed the weight limit of the turntable. Use the racks for convention cooking so there is no weight on the turntable.

We don't often buy sliced bread, we also bake our own bread usually twice a week and no problem toasting it either, wife and I like toasted oiled and garlic French Bread, but its too thick to go in the toaster.

We eventually found an ingenious way to toast it after many hours of deliberation and research we put it under the grill it works quite well  , saves getting the BBQ out when its raining like we used to, wife hated standing out in the garden with her umbrella:roll:

As strange as it seems we have proper bread all over the UK and the rest of the world, in my part of the world they bake bread to fit the size of our mouths :dmq:

Well if you only buy commercially  produce sliced bread you won't have noticed.

I only buy proper bread.

The problem I have is not unique to me:-

What type of bread are you trying to toast " French Sticks" for them you need a bigger kitchen a spit and a blow lamp

Proper bread that is between 6.5" and 7" inches tall which most toasters just will not accommodate. The all seem to be designed to only take commercial "sandwich tin" sized slices.

You never said you sliced your loaves lengthwise...

I don't but proper bread is taller than the slots in the majority of toaster are wide.

Toaster just arrived slots 10 inches long, long enough for large pitta breads as well as slices of bread.
