Switching between GB news and itv news at ten,only half listening and went over to itv......story about nato and then over to interview with Biden (they'd all been going on about how great it was to have a president not berating allies over defence spending) anyway Biden says when the US was first attacked back in 1941 nato stepped up to the plate.....sure that's what was said but anyway nobody commented.

If he did actually say that it shows a serious lack of historical knowledge. America was still largely an isolationist nation when it was attacked by the Axis powers in 1941. The USSR at the time became an immediate ally, due to having itself already been attacked by some of the same powers. NATO was not formed until 1949 and was designed to contain a very different threat, this time from the former ally, the USSR. The Axis powers who'd attacked America in 41 were long defeated by then. Biden ought to have known that.

But it is not untypical of lack of knowledge in American leaders or contenders for leadership. One former vice-presidential contender thought that the people of Latin America spoke Latin. Reagan notoriously often consulted horoscopes before making major decisions. Presidents often tend to be ignorant of the world outside America and rely heavily on their foreign policy advisors.
