Didn't we have: "Tough on Crime, and Tough on the Causes of Crime" from Blair and Straw half my lifetime ago?     

What happened? It was all tinkered with — plastic Policemen came and went, Police numbers were cut, CPS and Probation Service staff and funding were cut steadily for more than a decade. Now's not the time to up the rhetoric on orange clad chain gangs, boost stop and search, tag released offenders and monitor their premises, etc, without a comprehensive overhaul of the whole criminal justice system. Even though we take a long time apprehending criminals, we now imprison more people than anywhere else in democratic Europe — but we don't appear to have less crime.   


My feeling is that this just another diversion, to take the spotlight off so many recent failures...
