Surely there are plenty of practical reasons for British universities banning sombreros before we even touch on political correctness.  To start with there's a long list of health and safety concerns to do with visual obstruction, collision injuries, fire risk and, if the sombrero is worn hanging on one's back, strangulation.  Then there's the problem of space - if everyone is wearing a sombrero, then all except the most obese people will take up more space on the ground. This could be overcome by everyone overlapping brims but that carries its own dangers.  There is also the risk that people might be more difficult to identify as the hats are often worn together with a fake droopy moustache, effectively creating a disguise.

Then there's the environmental aspect.  Every Mexican hat worn by a non Mexican means one less hat for Mexicans to wear.

Look man, it's easy to suss. A university should have its own pool with palm trees, ice making machines, girls should be allowed into lecture theatres in bikinis, and hombres should be issued with these things like they focus on safe sex. The reason is man, that in Cambridge University in July of this year the temperature was recorded at 38 degrees, a record for Blighty, and some chick down there says it is going to get a whole load worse. So we lecturers need a change in diet. Like they could do with fitting out those ice cream parlours you get all around Milan. Make em government-subsidised, and campaign for more urgent action. Call it the Climate Mitigation Taskforce Stratageerising Committee.

So given Brum's rain, rain and more bloody rain, you can have a whole bloody mariachi band in gleaming Dulux brilliant white and still reflect less than a kettle element uses.

Implementing this in Spain however...

Doesn't stop them trying to sell us all solar cells which won't ever pay for themselves, unless I live to be 105 and the solar cells are stil over 50% efficient in 40 years.  :fpigs:

If everyone wore one and the tops were painted whit, this wold reflect the Sun's rays back into space, solving the (alleged) global warming problem.

BeelBeBub will be along shortly with the calculations, if he's not had too much mulled wine.

Why do you need Beelzebub's mis-spellled cousin to do the math for you ?

Immediately after I graduated in 1979 the university paid me a (fairly pitiful) salary of £4,500 pa pro rata for the 3 months I spent working for their mech eng and energy studies dept calibrating their water heating solar panels.. .

At high noon at 51degrees north on a cloud free day 1214 watts of solar energy hit every square metre of the ground. About an hour after sunrise, at 5:15am, with the rays having to traverse far more atmosphere to hit ground level that falls to just over 700, 600 if the rays have to penetrate the iron ore dust pollution rising from a steelworks (a problem in Britain pre Thatcher, not so much now).

An overcast cloud cover cuts this to between 300 and 400 at high noon

I used to think Shffield was OK. When I was looking for a university, they had a pretty good electronic engineering department. Well that's what it looked like to me anyway.

However, back to "cultural appropriation", I have done some research on it and it turned out the most culturally appropriated country is (any guesses)

The survey says Canada 100

then we have

Sweden 96

America 81

Australia 74

We're in 8th place with 49.

Scores normalised for 100 = top place, 0 = no "cultural appropriation" what-so-ever or "cultural what???".

Well, Sheffield is hardly a real university is it.

Sheffield University has been critcised for banning students from wearing sombreros as fancy dress.

Under the establishment's new policies, security staff will challenge any students they believe to be guilty of "cultural appropriation" over Halloween.
