From tomorrow Church Street, N16, a principal local shopping street and artery, will be closed to through traffic between 7am and 7pm.
Also, blocks of residential streets will find themselves ghettoised with only two or three access roads left open. Some streets within these blocks are also designated school streets, which means traffic is not allowed to use them during the start and end of the school day.  Where we live, our block has one, one-way access to the one-way (S to N) A10, and two, in-and-out access streets to Church Street, but the only useful direction on that is along to the one-way A10.

Some residents are not happy:

They claim there's been no consultation. This isn't strictly true — nearly two years ago I attended a "consultation" that concluded the only suggestions to be considered were those presented by the London Borough of Hackney. Unsurprisingly, the only ideas being implemented are those presented by LBH.

I think most residents are concerned with the amount of traffic and air quality — and the increasing number of cars and vans that are being changed for Ulez compliant vehicles show even reluctant green-supporters are being nudged along the green route.

What now concerns me is that because many of these road closures will prove unworkable for many businesses and residents, the whole scheme is likely to be scrapped after a couple of years, but that the damage to local businesses will be terminal, and what is currently a vibrant local community is in danger of becoming a dormitory wasteland...
