The fertility rate for England and Wales had dropped to 1.58.  That as far as I am aware is the lowest rate for some time:-

The total fertility rate in 2020 was an estimated 1.58 children per woman and 1.53 in Quarter 1 2021; this is in line with the recent trend of a decreasing total fertility rate each year since 2012 (at 1.93).
This info goes hand in hand with data on the increasing average age of the working population — caused not only by the rising state pension age and older people choosing to stay working longer, but also by fewer people actually entering the working population than leaving it. The UK is not alone in this and all its attendant problems — Italy and Japan are possibly even more affected...

Maybe we could lighten the load by having the youngsters have then babies, but unload them on the grandparents? Oldies don't sleep much or panic so much as first time parents. Plus, what else do we have to spend our money on?
