CRATER CRISIS Scotland's potholed roads worst in Europe after spending cuts, bad weather and record traffic

A TRIPLE whammy of spending cuts, bad weather and record traffic levels has made Scotland's potholed roads among the worst in Europe.
Our battered highways are in such disrepair that drivers complained about craters at a rate of one every THREE MINUTES over winter.

Neil Greig, of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, insists we can learn from our Continental neighbours when it comes to planning for the future.
He said: "The problem is we do invest less on the road network as a whole than most European countries.

Scots road users reported a whopping 53,531 potholes over the four months to March — the equivalent of 442 a day.
Hitting one can lead to damaged shock absorbers, broken suspension springs or distorted wheels — potentially causing serious accidents.
But councils only filled in 41,796 during the same period. And overall money for repairing roads has dropped by 26 per cent over the last five years.

On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...

England's A roads are "stuck in a rut" with motorists facing a "plethora of potholes", according to Government data.
The condition of one in every 25 miles of A road managed by councils was in the worst "red" category in the year ending March, Department for Transport (DfT) figures show.
Roads are put in this classification if they should be considered for maintenance.
The DfT said the proportion of roads in the "red" category is "stable" following a slight increase during 2019/20.
There has been no improvement in the figures since 2015/16.
Minor roads are in an even worse condition, with nearly one in every 16 miles in the "red" category.
In some parts of the country at least 8% of main roads and more than 10% of minor roads need fixing.
The figures also show that the condition of 17% of unclassified rods was in the "red".
