"Why have we got to learn maths sir?"

To the girls..

"Because your mum is paying me"

That sometimes worked.

To the boys...

"So that you can help the girls with their homework."

100% acceptance rate.

That is more about the difference between men and women Toots than anything else.

The grandchildren have started on A level maths and they wanted to know why Napier used the base e for his natural logarithms.

"Because that is the way God meant things to be," I explained.

My grandson accepted this as a perfectly reasonable explanation but the granddaughter went on and on about it and still hasn't shut up.

I have a theory about this. Some parents are natural teachers, they pad out the school learning with all sorts of information that the school probably doesn't worry about. eg telling the time on all sorts of clocks. Others don't even consider that life itself is an absolute treasure trove of learning experiences. Some would rather put their kids in front of a screen of some sort rather than talk/explain things to them. I have found it interesting to watch quietly the difference between my daughters and their husbands. Both husbands are highly educated and clever men but they can't teach they can only do. My daughters fortunately can and do teach all the time. They do all the padding. I see it even with my younger daughter and her 3 month old already.

In this world of such fast moving information I think that often the explanations are missing. As long as you have seen and accepted the end result the why doesn't always feature.

Various "news" items recently about the youth of today, allege that they can't read an analogue clock and can't open a pie tin with a tin-opener and so on and so on.

Frankly where the hopeless and helpless youth/children  are puzzles me, if they exist their parents must be the problem.

Mine can read the clock and tell me the time in Latin. They are also able to keep my variety of antique computers running. Rather than have me fork out on Windows 10, my son has located a version of Ubuntu that works on the even the least of my one lunged adding machines.

They are polite, kind, confident, politely cocky and overall the best of children.

I don't know who is running the world right now but it ain't me, so today's kids must be doing something right.
