There have once again been reported cases of the places where people are sent to be 'cared for/healed' and it makes me really upset. Not only about how dire their situation is but the evident cruelty and lack of care those who are supposed to be dedicated to their jobs display.

Anorexia, autism, mental health all are shoved away in places with little or no accountability either to their parents or society at large. So often we hear that lessons will be learned but at what point are those really  responsible going to be held to account? Where are the doctors who seemingly treat them but ignore their 24 hour care as if it doesn't have any impact? Words are so cheap.

I'm sure they are not keeping him locked up for their own pleasure. It's actually quite difficult to get people sectioned and the cases have to be reviewed. The cost of keeping him there must be high, but what is left out of the story is the behavioural problems which led to him being detained in the first place.

His mother wants him out of hospital, would she be able to have him home, or is is the stigma of the name "Rampton" that is part of the problem?
Well it's funny that some who have campaigned hard have had their relations released and are now living happily and peacefully in the community.

QuoteAfter he went missing when he was 15, police found him and he was taken into the system. His mother was told he'd be home after six months following assessments.
15 years later, after being moved from secure unit to secure unit, Mrs Rogers is still waiting for him to come home.
"If Adam gets upset because of what's going on around him they'll restrain him or seclude him," said Mrs Rogers. It's not something she finds easy to talk about.
In one unit, Adam was kept in seclusion for five weeks and another for five months. He was alone just staring at bare walls and a locked door.

Doesn't sound a danger to me,I daresay anyone never mind someone with autism being shoved in a blank room for months on end would kick off.

QuotePatients are only admitted to Rampton Hospital if they are referred by a health professional and assessed by the Hospital as meeting the criteria for admission.

All patients admitted to a clinical service in the Hospital are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) and classified as having a learning disability, mental illness and/or a psychopathic disorder.

Patients will have been assessed as requiring treatment under conditions within a high secure environment, meeting the criteria of posing a grave and immediate danger to themselves or the public. Many will have come via the Criminal Justice System.

Most admissions will be under Part III of the MHA, either from the court, from prison or a medium security unit.

Those patients who have not committed a criminal offence are a civil admission under Part II of the MHA and will usually have come from a lower level security hospital setting and have been assessed as potentially a serious danger to others.

Referrals come from:

courts
prisons
secure hospitals
general mental health services
independent sector hospitals
The average length of stay in the Hospital is approximately five years, but a very small number of patients are likely to remain at Rampton Hospital for a significantly longer period of time.

Unfortunately, that is an old story and a national scandal.

Well it's the system making them that way.

You could blame this on the crisis the country is going through but this has been going on for years.

There have been instances of maltreatment in the past, even raised on here but with little interest.

These are human beings, often the most vulnerable but farmed out sometimes to the private sector.
As a nation we should be ashamed this is happening.
