I do tend to notice that here in Plymouth, where the limits are sensible for the road, most drivers adhere to them. In many places that may well be 20mph, though in many others it will be 30mph. In some places it is 40. Where the speed limit is stupidly slow for the road is where many more drivers ignore it.

That is because of the speed cameras.

In my retail job I spoke to an elderly couple who had recently returned from Wales. Now elderly couples are not generally renowned for speeding everywhere. Indeed many of them bimble along at half the speed limit with a mobile tailback behind them. But this couple were telling me that on some of the roads the new 20 mph limit applied to in Wales, it took enormous concentration to drive so slowly, especially when repeatedly being overtaken by bicycles. Which is clearly a lunacy. Little wonder then that on many such roads 85% of drivers ignore the new limit. Stage 2 of course will see the increased deployment of mobile speed camera vans on such roads, as a great revenue raising measure.

There is one bit of duel carriageway where they reduced the limit from 40 to 30. Most drivers no longer obeyed the law. Then after a couple of years a rethink saw the limit increased to 40 again. Most drivers now obey the limit. Policing by consent thus works reasonably effectively with speed limits as well.

Two speed cameras on one of Cornwall's main roads appear to have been cut down.

The average speed cameras at Perranarworthal, between Truro and Falmouth, were installed in March 2023 after several years of campaigning by local people.
Cornwall councillor for the area Peter Williams said he was "astounded" by the "ridiculous" act.
Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall Council have been contacted by the BBC.
