Starmer does not rule out 20,000 prisoners being released early

Sir Keir Starmer has not ruled out 20,000 prisoners being released early in a bid to ease pressure on the justice system - as the new prime minister told Sky News the last government acted "almost beyond recklessness" on criminals.

I doubt if even Ove Arup could build the prisons needed fast enough.

I understand there are around 10,000 foreign prisoners in our prisons which could be sent back to their home countries, either released early or to serve their sentences there.
That would free up space and save us money and get rid of the unwelcome ####s

It will be interesting to see whether they simply open the gates or actually manage to sort out living, tag and Probation Services in time. The Conservatives constantly seemed to live in a chocolate teapot so we can only hope that the chaos that Labour claim to be solving doesn't descend into a worse disaster for the rest of us.

I heard someone state today that it would be the start of a good plan if they deported all the illegals who are currently housed in jail. We can only hope.

I assume this is going to be lower level of prisoners who spend some time on release anyway who would be on a tag and then on license . I dont think anyone is suggesting  any long term violent criminals being among the 20,000.

Prisons like all infrastructure in the UK has fallen behind the population growth and needs major works to make them fit for purpose .

Ive never been a fan of this serving half your sentence and you're free to go malarkey ,10 years should mean 10 years not 5 . Neither do I see much use of short terms (2 in 5 are serving 6 months or less ) giving these community orders and /or house arrest would free up 40% of prison places at a stroke .
