To an extent I agree except we have parents termed 'helicopter parents' who hardly let their kids out of their sight yet give them access to screens with little regard for what they see. We seem to be giving mixed messages all the time.

Ah, I've been out of it for a few days, I missed this...

My children now in their 30s had computers in their rooms and a firm statement that I would see everything they did. As they got older I told them I gave not a shit what they surfed but I would be logging it and if you didnt like that then tough.

I really didnt care what they downloaded because I knew telling them I knew would stop the worst, and filters they never saw kept the very worst malware off my network.

Melissa has an android tablet. She knows her mums phone through which she hotspots logs and filters. She knows my router does the same when shes at ours.

She is actually bright enough to defeat those blocks and she is also smart enough to know I will know if she does.

But while she has an android tablet  she also has dance classes twice a week, theatre classes, the school choir, the science club ....

What I meant when I said let kids be kids is few seem to do the kid things I did or my kids did. Melissa does ...

All newspapers  have  sensationalist  headlines . Its how they sell papers ,its not that long ago that the Guardian  along with the BBC was telling us we were all going to starve because of Brexit but you just keep digging out the right wing press if it makes you feel better .  (Is the mail still right wing ?)

But Kids , yes I think they are fed too much information they are not ready for which may contribute . Too much peer pressure , for sure and I know Im going to be shot down on this but too much technology for me . Whos idea was it to give kids access to the web , their own phones which these days are mini computers .

They need protecting  ,that's our job and sadly I think we have let them down on the mental side and probably over done it on the physical

The Daily Express is another "we are all going to die," newspaper with scary (wrong) articles on a daily basis.

Advancing technology.

Every successful society has spent as much time as possible on the well being of its children. But the sheer slog of the daily grind meant that time was limited. When my brother, sister and I started acting up we got lots of love, hugs and (in the case of me and the brother)the occasional belt round the ear. Frankly, I have always thought that mum's approach was more effective than any amount of Ritalin or TLAs, but the point was that neither she nor my father had time for a lot else. But this generation has so we now have lots more things to worry on.

Quite, these days if a child ended up in the casualty department as often as I did social services and possibly the police would be on the case.

I don't think we can simply blame the likes of DM after all it is us the adults who have allowed the situation to develop the way it has surely.

I blame the Daily Mail, (other "we are all going to die media/press available.)

My wife and I were camping in a friends garden to be at Helston Flora Day a few years ago.

As we were putting up the tent, their little boy, (at the time he was not old enough for school,) asked us if we had been evicted.

That was a shock.

I also currently know a number of teen/pre teen self harmers. (Which given the state of their parents does not surprise me.)

So who is at fault? Should children be kept away from TV/media news for example. Have we reverted to Tudor times when they treated children as mini adults. Or have we gone too much the other way and are protecting them too much from reality so that they cannot cope? I don't think we can simply blame the likes of DM after all it is us the adults who have allowed the situation to develop the way it has surely.

Have we made life simply too much to cope with now?

We are hearing more and more of child mental health as well as general health concerns. Why is that? Are they being made aware of adult problems before they are ready. Are we asking them to grow up too soon? Are too many parents not parenting well enough? Has the State/teachers taken too much of a role leaving parents without a recognised role?

I remember having concerns as a youngster.

The climate was of concern then with the difference that I was told that by now we would be in an ice age. I wasn't sure for a while what I would do as a career. There were several occasions when I thought my life was a bit grim. I will not pretend that it was the same then. Obviously it was very different in many ways.

Have we made life simply too much to cope with now?
