You haven't really got anything to support your "Didn't take long", have you?

A temporary mobile testing unit has been set-up in a Weston-super-Mare car park as the town's hospital has temporarily stopped accepting new patients.

Hospital bosses said due to the "high number of patients with coronavirus", Weston General Hospital would temporarily stop accepting new patients as a precautionary measure from 8am on Bank Holiday Monday (May 25).

A message sent out to local NHS staff also reportedly stated that testing of staff at the hospital revealed "40 per cent as COVID-19 positive".

OK, but you posted "Didn't take long" as if it supported your assertion that relaxing the lockdown will cause a spike in infections, but there are no figures to support this.

Your second link and extract simply mirror the first.

As far as I'm aware we just had our first full day without a death since St Patrick's day, so cause for optimism, but our population is relatively small and sparse, so idk how it reflects on the bigger picture.

Good news. I hope we all follow the same way..

Just a point wrt the other conversation going on - feeding the birds is actually very important right now -

I've never seen the seagulls so competitive over food locally. They are starving too supposedly.

So feed the wildlife if you can folks.

Oh btw - on a tangent; reason #555,555 why the EU is a good thing. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-falklands-penguins-conservation-eu-funding-best-climate-change-a8520261.html%3Famp">https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.indepe ... html%3famp">https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-falklands-penguins-conservation-eu-funding-best-climate-change-a8520261.html%3famp

Think of the baby penguins in the Falklands! (is my blatantly sickeningly emotive appeal to your inner nurturing instincts working?)

Not another wager!  Your local wildlife going to start suffering from type 2 diabetes before long!

Do you know you might have a point?

One of the foxes on the allotment had the mange and we put its medication on slices of bread and jam. And the rats and hedgehogs scoff the blackberries and other sweet fruits. And last week I threw some out of date Metformin away and next day it had gone, so maybe the wildlife has gone down with Type 2 and is self medicating.

That said, are you in or out? It is only a score and to be honest, this bug is getting boring. A small flutter would help cheer us all up.

Anyone care for a wager on this?

I reckon that the total deaths due to Covid 19 for the week 14 - 20 June will less than 350. If I am wrong I will put out £20 of food for the local wildlife. If I am right you do the same.

Any takers?

I don't doubt that there will be sudden flurries  of increases in numbers of Covid cases. And I think we can be certain there will be annual seasonal outbreaks for the next few winters. That's why the NHS is likely to keep most of the additional ICUs it's made in the established hospitals, as well as keeping the additional Nightingale Hospital accommodation...

The problem is these "outbreaks" will escalate very quickly into epidemics without very effective surveillance and isolation.

The figures from Imp/Ox Uni estimate that the number of infections in the UK went from 14k to 200k in the 20 days before lockdown.

That's 3 weeks, slightly more than the time it will take for the patients who caught it in day 1 to start dying.

We need a very rapid test/trace/isolate system to start squashing the outbreaks before they can get a foothold.

Unfortunately none of the 3 components are up and running yet and the "isolate" component is now unlikely to work without further changes to the law and rebuilding public trust.

I know a nurse who works in Weston and it's threefold - they've had a big Covid patient increase in the last week, a lot of their medical staff have tested positive as well, and they're still having issues getting healthy patients discharged to care homes.
