So are you contending Jennifer Frontera's concern is legitimate or not...?

Oh I think the concern that the virus attacks the brain, and myriad other organs is entirely legitimate.

My issue was her expressed confusion at the widespread nature of the cells the virus attacks.

Maybe there is a timing issue here..

The fact COVID19 enters the cell by conning the ACE2 receptor was only made known at the end of March.

As soon as I saw the first report of that in a scientific journal, everything became clear to me, but that's because I am on a prescribed course of drugs that block the operation of the receptor by looking like the ACE2 molecule just as Covid 19 does.

If Ms Fronteras remarks were made before early april.i can see why she might have not been able to join the dots. If they were made substantially after the posting of that finding, shes ill informed ....

And there's a lot more still to be learned about this disease — which appears to be developing more sinister effects (extract from the New Scientist):

JENNIFER FRONTERA has been treating people in intensive care for years. But she has never experienced anything like covid-19 before. "These patients are absolutely among the sickest any of us have ever encountered," says the New York-based doctor. But the strange thing is, Frontera isn't a lung disease specialist or a virologist, she is a neurologist. And it is the possible impact of the coronavirus on our brains that is worrying her.

It was early in the outbreak in New York that Frontera and her colleagues began to notice neurological symptoms in those with covid-19. People were passing out before they were hospitalised. Once in hospital, some of them started having unusual movements. Some had seizures and others had strokes.

Similar reports are coming in from hospitals around the world. Some neurological symptoms appear to be mild, such as the loss of smell and taste. At the other end of the spectrum, a few people have developed encephalitis – a potentially fatal inflammation of the brain.

It is a surprising discovery in a disease that was generally considered to attack the airways, and one of pressing concern. One big question is how the new coronavirus is causing these kinds of symptoms. Growing evidence suggests that the virus may work its way into the brain, directly attacking neurons. If that is the case, we may need to reconsider some of the treatments being developed for covid-19. And we must also prepare for potential long-term and chronic neurological conditions in some survivors.

well, time for me to put my lab coat back on

THIS from March this year is one of several papers revealing the way COVID19 gets into your cells. It isn't particularly remarkable for anyting else. In short, COVID19 has a surface component that mimics the renal angiotensin converting enzyme 2 and it is this which it uses as its door knocker.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2667944/">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2667944/

The above article is 12 years old. I am quite shocked anyone allowed to wear a stethoscope and call themselves a neurologist is unaware of it, or any of the further research that cites it. In short, the transport mechanism (transport through cell membranes was my post graduate research project) that permits ACE2 into the cell is widespread across tissue types, including the brain.

It was at least a month ago that I heard some consultant express shock at the speed at which this virus attacks multiple organ sites.

Yet the above articles are two months, and twelve years old respectively.

I wish youtube had been around in 1981, it would have augmented my lectures on membrane transport systems amazingly

Because here's the problem expressed better that I ever, ever could

Whose that knocking at the door ? It looks like the loving husband, but once in, the axe man starts chucking his axe around.

Hmmm - well the graphs are turning upwards (although only a couple of days isn't conclusive).

Let's hope this is based on science and bot on a desire to bury the Cummings story...

I actually thought it was quite funny him standing there saying the numbers were going down, backed by graphs showing they were turning upwards again.

Still - even if he's telling lies, it won't be the first one this week, or no doubt even this hour.

The latter if the latest data is analysed. (Number of infections per day is still far too high.)
