Well fair play to you in that you weren't taken in though it looks like so many in the remain camp were and convinced of the thick brexiteers.
A totally fake story.

I disagree it is a total fake story, fake was obvious, but for those Brits resident in France, who have not regularised their situation, (there are a significant number trying to live "under the radar,) they will be in the deep poo on January 1st 2021.
This has been discussed at length on a forum I used to use and because of it panic set in nearly two years ago. In some areas of France officialdom is hostile to to expat Brits who have ignored the regulations for years and are being very obstructive with very long delays processing paperwork.

I'm putting it in jokes and humour as although the author claims it's "100% true", I suspect (or maybe hope?) that it's made up, or at least highly exaggerated.

Is the Roscoff ferry running yet, PS?  Bet you can't wait to get away.

VERY limited sailings, and I don't know how many times I have to write this. I can't go anywhere outside of my property until my GP tells me in writing that I can.

Aside from the issue of property ownership and residency, there is probably also a big issue around healthcare.

At the moment from January 2021 it is a big unknown. ( Sarkozy made it difficult for expat Brits living in France some years ago, so I don't expect it to get easier.)

Aside from the issue of property ownership and residency, there is probably also a big issue around healthcare.

It may end up that only those with large amounts of £ can afford to retire to an EU country in future if there are large medical bills involved.

Either that, or they will have to have some kind of "permanent" travel insurance where they get repatriated to the UK if they get seriously ill, but even that can be very expensive for retired folk who are more likely to have various long term health conditions.

I suspect this will effectively prevent lower income people from retiring to the EU unless there is some kind of reciprocal healthcare arrangements, which seems unlikely given the stance the UK government is currently taking and their known political ideologies.

What's to stop them applying for a permanent visa?

I suggest you look that up bearing in mind what will happen on January 1st 2021

The reality is if any Brits resident in France who have not formalised their residency, basically getting French citizenship, by January the 1st 2021 they are in the deep poo.
Last year my wife and I had to provide documentary evidence to the  French government to prove were are not resident in France which we did.
The bank clerk at the branch of where we have a French bank account filled the complex forms we had been sent and made copies of all the required documents. (Passports, British tax references, British utility bills, council tax bill)
The clerk was pleased to do so because he had not seen the forms before. (I think we may be the only Brits with an account at that branch.)
