3 million Hong Kong Chinese headed for Britain.

Not the Eu's fault this time. Rather makes the point that EU influence was only ever one factor in this countries  future being multicultural .

We did, of course, have a policy for Hong Kong residents atbthe time of the handover. Those able to open a uk bank account and put five million sterling in it could have a british passport, those not able to do that could rot under their Maoist masters.

Let's face it ,Hong Kong, is an embarrassment ,plain and simple . There is no viable way for us to stop the Chinese taking full control of the territory and it's people . The blow can only be softened at best .  It's not even certain if China, will allow millions to leave. Some would say morality was compromised in a big way the day we leased the territory and it's people. Just another problem thrown up by our past history, that we have no instant answer for.

Probably the least we can do given the situation, though of course many will have obligations etc that bind them to remain in Hong Kong.

Jesus Christ Leyland, it is a slow day and one takes what one can get, but even by your standards that is one sadly twee post.

The big difference is that there are not 2 million unchecked Syrian refugee's running around in Hong Kong, unlike the EU !!

My point was about culture, not security. Although if you think the Chinese ,would miss the opportunity to slip a few patriots in the mix. I would disagree . We will see how well we deal with securing our borders ,post EU.  That will be interesting.

Totally agree. It's a fact of life that applied throughout the Brexit saga. Nothing's changed . I can see the government being keen to get their hands on two or three hundred thousand of the more affluent of the three million, in fact I think that would be a given, but  three million is unthinkable .
If the lid comes right off of Hong Cong, and people can leave ,there could be competition around the world for the wealth many have. But 3million is going to take some coping with where ever they go.
Countries were queuing up to offer citizenships to any Hong Kong resident who could bring $1m with them when Britain handed the colony back in '97. Seems likely to be the same now most economies need money, but many offers will possibly low key so as not to upset Mr Xi...

We don't have the infrastructure to absorb the numbers if they all took this offer up.

Dump them in Tower Hamlets and they would soon create the infrastructure. And cheer the place up.

But think of all the employment they could offer in laundries and food distribution operations...

China are a bit upset and won't let the people leave. Who would have thought that China would trample all over HK human rights, eh?
