Quote from: Streetwalker on September 03, 2020, 03:22:31 PMWell apparently they are not only playing it now they are going to get a couple of  the BBC choir who dont give a feck to sing it . So I guess people stopped using the charts as a protest .

Very astute that the people stopped using the charts as a protest for the week ending 30th August based on a decision made on the 2nd September.

Indeed , its the  people who can  read the tea leaves that get the extra biscuit  :P

It is ok. The Tim Davie, the new Director General was once the Deputy Chairman of the Fulham and Hammersmith Conservative party, so Auntie is in a safe pair of hands.

Does he know how to Whistle Dixie ?

After a short campaign started by Lawrence Fox and continued across social media Land of Hope and Glory has reached number 1 in the charts . The BBC Radio one chart show on Sunday will have to play it or face  yet another backlash from the public

Maybe next week we will get Rule Britannia in at number two .  Swing low sweet Chariot at three ,  this could be a fun distraction from the schools going back ,the covid numbers and the tories are killing us threads .

Following up on this - The song did not finish the week top of the charts, or indeed in the top 10, it charted at 17th, just behind Jason Derulo.
Seems Britainnia does not rule the waves, or indeed its own pop charts.

No Britannia no longer rules the waves but maybe its good that it once did when its superiority on the seas went some way to ending slavery .

There's also the Black & White Rag, Evergreen Rag, Red Pepper Rag and for those who like to be stirred by battles won, the Victory Rag — they could all be featured one day as The Proms' music net gets spread wider and wider...

Because nobody knows the words they will be on the bottom of the screen and you will be able to sing along . A bit like karaoke , you can invite freinds round , have a right good sing song  and wave the flag of your choice . Traditionally thats the union flag but if you want to wave a rainbow one or that blue rag from Brussels thats OK to, its all about enjoying yourself .

I guess, if the words and sentiments in these songs are nothing to get worked up about, the output of various rappers should be enjoyed without criticism too...

Well I certainly wont be enjoying any rap which I find  offends the ears in its mind numbing vocal limitations . But everyone one to their own if you don't like any genre of music just don't listen to it .

It's tradition!. We don't have a national costume or many traditions. I see no good reason for not allowing people to sing songs that rouse them and have emotional value. The country is turning into a dull grey mass of empty rhetoric. Turning every which way to appease dissenting voices leaves us valueless and directionless.

That's fair, but the reason was wrt spreading COVID. Don't you think mass singalongs are a bit ..risky? If everyone's distanced and maybe masked then in principle it should be ok, if muffled.

Yes. It's true that covid has killed the proms as far as real atmosphere is concerned and I can see that singing isn't going to happen this year. I just fear the thin edge of the wedge again. No song this year with no uproar then just forget it in future. There is always more than one way to skin a cat and my hope is that the uproar will have saved this particular feline.
