The Chinese remember the Opium Wars. I suspect their opinion of Britain is not good.

Apparently it is one of the fist things all Chinese school children learn in their history lessons. I learnt it from a "conspiracy theorist" .



Anyhow the central issue there was the British liked tea and the Chinese had 50% of world GDP at the time. Their trading routes spread across the globe. The British tea ships would dock and load up with tea, but the British were into the idea that a trading ship should not only grab a cargo for its own market, but should come with merchandise from the British Empire so it was like more economic and the ships would be useful in both directions. The question was, what could the British sell the Chinese, because the Chinese had everything they needed already. They just did not want to buy anything from the British.



This is why I wanted to find out if it is the same today, and it looks like it is. They see us as nutters, and I found out the same thing way back when I toured Italy on my motorbike. I stopped off and met a group of Italian chicks and announced "hello I'm British" in Italian. They burst out in laughter. I didn't get the joke at the time, but now I do.
