I've had a look at this chap. He was a socialist, and then became an imperialist. The book in question is about the Spanish and set in the time where they were on a voyage to establish the "new world" and to quote wiki

"The novel consistently emphasises the superiority of English mercantile values over those of the Spanish"

Wacist it most likely is, but are the complainants Spanish? If not then they do not have a case.

Thousands of residents in a Devon town at the centre of a 'ridiculous' race row say they want to keep the town's famous "Little White Town" description on local sign posts.

Last week we revealed how a town councillor had brought a motion to Bideford Town Council to try and scrap the tagline after he received complaints that it was racist and could make the council look like "white supremacists".

The "Little White Town" moniker comes from Charles Kingsley's book Westward Ho! which was written in 1855 and set in and around the area.

It refers to the colour of the house and streets which, at the time, were lime-washed and spread with ash to prevent the spread of cholera.

However, Cllr McGeough said he had received complaints about the tagline, suggesting it could be seen as a racist slur.
