Well if they are of sound mind, surely they are capable of stopping from racially abusing those who want to treat them?

What I noted in the document is what I would expect - if someone is racially abusing the staff, they should follow a process which includes one or more warnings.  If they continue to do that, their treatment should be stopped until they stop racially abusing the staff.  If they stop doing it, their treatment can commence again.

If they are mentally ill and therefore incapable of controlling themselves, then I agree that this would not be appropriate.

Talking of "letting them die" is probably an exaggeration - presumably if they are just about to die they will fall unconscious and therefore can be treated without any abuse occurring.

I agree but letting someone die because they are racist and a bit fick is imho indefensible.

I support the staff and question why we/they should ever have to tolerate such abuse. The only abuse which should be tolerated is when the patient is not in control of their own thought processes, i.e. mentally ill or delirious patients, and the staff will recognise these.

Some item on the beeb ealrlier about this...

Patients who racially abuse hospital staff could have their treatment withdrawn, an NHS trust said.

It's a topic at the moment.

I deplore racism but this is equally deplorable and morally indefensible. No matter how much I find someone's views bigoted, wishing death on them or letting them suffer is 100% indefensible and wrong IMHO. However, police action should follow clear cut cases of harassment, abuse and certainly violence; such is clearly unacceptable, no ifs no buts.
