I put some food down for the fox and he came along, ate what he could and buried the rest for later. Then the jackdaws flew down and ate the worms the fox had dug up while making the hole.

And that was that.

I always had some sort of idea that these ecological chains went on forever, but as far as I can see, I fed the fox, the fox fed the jackdaws and that was it.
