As a lover of classical music.  Who sang Nessun Dorma the best.  On the male side.  Without doubt. Luciano Pavarotti.  On the female side.  Sarah Brightman. Mind you  Jussi Björling was way before modern acoustics. And Mario Lanza could belt out the Drinking song. But not in the same class as Luciano Pavarotti.

I just watched the first video and wish I hadn't. Goodness it gets murdered so often. Why do some imagine they can sing? Anyway I found it quite interesting to hear the differences with the younger voices. They lack all the power but have a purer quality. Very interesting thread thank you.

Thank you it's a long time since I have heard that. My father was a singer (trained but not professional) and that took me right back to listening to tenors as a girl. Gigli was a favourite.

Yeh. Its brilliant and I have heard of them all.  But Luciano Pavarotti to me takes the biscuit. Just like it blew this guy away.

For me you can't beat live performances  whatever your preferred tastes in music is .  Not a great fan of classical or opera but did attend a do when in Rome (and all that ) . The tenors voice echoing around the old church in which the performance was taking place as he reached the crescendo of Nessun Dorma  knocked the spots off anything Ive heard elsewhere by anyone attempting the same .
The Pavarotti version that became popular during the Italian world cup a couple of years after my visit was good  but not as good as what I heard .

Yeh.  I could go along with that. Harry Secombe came to the middle east in the early 60's, along with Bob Monkhouse.. He sang this. Not sure if it is considered classical.  I am not even Welsh.  But the hair on my neck stood up with the passion he belted it out.

No I don't agree - you can't leave Placido Domingo out of the mix and have you ever heard Gigli - superb!
