There is lots of folk lore about signs of a hard winter to come.
The Ball and Chain has gone into preparation for a hard winter mode, collecting a large amount of windfall fruit, and similar and making vast quantities of jam, piccalilli, and pickle.
She has inventoried and catalogued every bit of tinned, bottled, and dried food in the house. Put out for consumption anything close to it sell by date.
