I use the train at Christmas but I hate doing it. It's the train that runs from Bristol to London that i use, and if these people mess it up for me then I'm going to get very annoyed with them. I expect a level of service because I'm the customer.

Trains are getting more and more automated with the DLR being driverless and the Tube heading that way.

The intelligent thing would be to sack the drivers and keep the guards for security.

LOL , its a thought Borchester but I don't think we can compare a oversized train set which is basically what the DLR is and mainline railways

Having family in Dorset I use SW trains quite regularly and with planning the advanced fares are quite reasonable .You wouldn't want to go on the spur of the moment .However that's not the argument ,its about safety and peoples jobs ,jobs that IMO are necessary in the functioning of a public friendly railway .

These strikes on this issue  though have been going on for too long  with unfair disruption to peoples lives and SW trains really do need to have another look at this .

In the meantime I'll be looking for a refund on the tickets I brought for a pre Christmas visit to Weymouth

You can thank the government for forcing unions to strile longer thanks to the Trade Union Act. As for the strikers if they don't fight to protect their interests nobody else will, especially it seems, people like you.

I have not travelled on a train in the UK for years due to the fact the fares are too high and inconvenient for me especially if carrying heavy luggage as one gets older, but I do know people that do use them to commute into London and the service is bad enough and unreliable as it is.

Wife and I were away last weekend to visit family to travel by train would have cost over £200 by the time I could get to Euston I can be in Birmingham driving myself, I am thinking more of those who would lose money not being able to get work and back, or whose holiday plans have been ruined over an argument about a guard on a train.

I am sure some do not want to go on strike, and some may even fear the consequences if the don't

The longest strike of a railway in the UK will take place for 27 days in December on South Western Railways which will cause havoc with the travelling public , those trying to get to and from work, those wanting to travel into London for Christmas shopping or wanting to see productions in the theatres, hospital appointments, people going home for Christmas to be with their families  etc.

Londons economy will be hit hard once again not good for the nation or the treasury

Large engineering projects, maintenance scheduled at a least two major Stations in London will compound the misery for the long suffering high fare paying public, as the RMT arm wrestle with the Railway Company for control over guards on new trains or not which has dragged on for far to long.

Oh what Joy and Christmas cheer the RMT brings to one and all at Christmas

It works both ways and frankly, have you talked to conductors at xmas? I have and they hate going on strike.

But when you've got a govt and corrupt and in some cases also foreign owned companies who want to reduce safety standards, and overcharge passengers and deliver some of the worst setvices in WE whilst underpaying their employees, you've got to wonder who's in the right here churchy. ;)
